The Sabarimala pilgrimage to the hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa is one of the largest annual gatherings of devotees anywhere on earth. The shrine sits deep in the Periyar forest hills of Kerala, reached from the base camp at Pamba.
The season
The main pilgrimage runs through the Mandala–Makaravilakku season from mid-November to mid-January, with the temple also opening for monthly poojas. Devotees observe a 41-day vratham before undertaking the journey.
Reaching Pamba
From Tamil Nadu, pilgrims typically travel via Madurai and Theni, crossing into Kerala at Kumily near Thekkady and continuing to Pamba. From Pamba, the final stretch to Sannidhanam is on foot up the hill.
