Rameswaram is one of the Char Dham and among the holiest sites for Shaivites, reached across the sea on the iconic Pamban bridge. It rewards an unhurried visit — the rituals here are involved, and the island has more to see than the main temple.
The 22 theertham bath
Pilgrims first take a dip at Agni Theertham in the sea, then proceed to bathe at the 22 sacred wells inside the Ramanathaswamy Temple, where temple staff draw water for each. Carry a change of clothes — you will get thoroughly wet.
Beyond the temple
- Pamban Bridge — stop for photos of the sea on both sides.
- Dhanushkodi — the storm-ruined town at the very tip, where the road runs into the sea.
- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial — a moving tribute to Rameswaram's most famous son.
- Gandhamadhana Parvatham — the island's highest point with views all around.
The Dhanushkodi stretch is remote with little shade or food. A car with a driver who knows the tides and timing makes it far more comfortable than the local jeeps.
