The single biggest way to control your taxi cost in Tamil Nadu is choosing the right trip type. The wrong choice can mean paying for an empty return journey you never sit in.
When a one-way taxi wins
If you're travelling A to B and not coming straight back — flying out from the destination, continuing by train, or staying several days — a one-way drop is almost always cheaper. You pay for a single direction plus a modest one-way driver allowance, not the return run.
When a round trip makes sense
- Day trips where you return the same day (e.g. Chennai–Tirupati–Chennai).
- Multi-stop sightseeing where you want the car waiting all day.
- Remote destinations where finding a return car is hard.
How the fare is built
A one-way fare is distance × per-km rate + driver bata, with tolls and parking itemised. There's usually a minimum billed distance (around 130 km for cars), which is why very short hops are quoted at the minimum.
Always get the fare confirmed in writing on WhatsApp before the trip. A clear quote up front is the simplest protection against end-of-trip surprises.
