The East Coast Road (ECR) hugs the Bay of Bengal from Chennai down to Pondicherry, and the 160 km drive is half the fun. With a car you can turn a simple transfer into a string of memorable stops.
Stops worth making
- Mahabalipuram — the Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas and Krishna's Butterball.
- Crocodile Bank — a conservation centre kids love.
- DakshinaChitra — a living heritage museum of South Indian crafts and homes.
- Beachside seafood shacks along the way for a long lunch.
Timing the drive
Leave Chennai after the morning rush and you'll reach Pondicherry by mid-afternoon with two or three stops. The light on the water is best in the early morning and late afternoon — plan photo stops accordingly.
